Free ED Workshop for Spanish-speaking parents

This is a free, two-part educational workshop in Spanish for
parents with children, adolescents, or young adults struggling with eating disorders. The workshop offers Latino families with accessible information on the clinical treatment of children with eating disorders. The information provided is intended to breakdown eating disorder concepts in a way that is easy to understand.

My name is Jessica Pinera, I am a clinical social worker in Albuquerque, New Mexico who works with eating disorders. I decided to offer this workshop after receiving many calls from Spanish- speaking parents seeking support for their children. In our culture, eating disorders are not commonly understood, which adds to the stress of supporting children and creates barriers to obtaining professional support. Additionally, it is often difficult to obtain information and support in Spanish, creating additional treatment obstacles.
Parents that participate in the workshop will be provided with information and tools on how to lovingly support children with eating disorders.

The first 2-hour series will focus on the following:
What is an eating disorder?
Latino culture and language effects on eating disorders Why parents are essential part in their recovery
Ways to support your teens and young adults

The second 2-hour series will focus on the following:
The importance of nutrition in recovery
Moving beyond hunger cues
Language around meals
When do parent’s step-in to offer help?
Why does having clear boundaries provide them with loving support?
